GUWAHATI, January 17, 2026 – In a swift and heroic operation, personnel of the Indian Army rescued a young woman from drowning in the Brahmaputra River near the Saraighat Bridge on Wednesday evening, January 14.
The Rescue Operation
The incident occurred around 4:00 PM when soldiers from the 236 Inland Water Transport (IWT) Operational Unit of the Engineers were on routine duty. The team was stationed aboard marine crafts anchored near Sadilapur Ghat when they heard desperate cries for help coming from beneath the Saraighat Bridge.
Swift Response: Acting instantly, the jawans deployed a safety boat and navigated through the river currents to reach the struggling woman.
Life-Saving Action: The woman was pulled from the water and immediately administered first aid on board the rescue craft to stabilize her condition.
The Heroic Team: The successful rescue was carried out by Nb Sub Ali Mohammad, Hav Subhash Chandra, Hav Magan Singh, and Nk Rajender Singh, whose alertness prevented a major tragedy.
Handover to Authorities
The rescued woman, identified as a resident of the Ulubari area in Guwahati, was later handed over to the Pandu River Police Station for further medical assessment and formalities. Authorities have praised the Army unit for their high level of readiness and professionalism.
