Prompt action of the Malda District Police, the main accused in the murder of a papad vendor has been arrested.

On November 25, 2025, Md. Azhar Momin (75 years old), a papad vendor by profession, was shot by some unknown assailants in the Jalalpur Nicherkandi area under Kaliachak Police Station in Malda while returning home from Jagdishpur. He was seriously injured and was initially taken to Sujapur Primary Health Center, and later referred to Malda Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Based on a written complaint from the deceased's son, a case was registered at Kaliachak Police Station in accordance with the law.

During the investigation, on January 9, 2026, the police arrested a person named Sajir Sardar alias Md. Safiul Islam (26 years old), son of late Israfil Sardar, resident of Jolamor, Gayeshbari, Police Station - Kaliachak, District - Malda. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime, and based on his statement, the police recovered a 7 mm pistol used in the incident. The accused has been taken into police custody for further investigation.
