Nalbari Woman’s Solo Meji Becomes Symbol of Grit and Tradition

As Bhogali Bihu approaches, a young woman from Nalbari has inspired many with her extraordinary effort. Harshita Devi of the Barmurikanar area near the Pagladiya embankment single-handedly constructed a Meji, a task usually done collectively by villagers. From cutting reeds to designing and shaping the structure into a boat-like form, she did every step herself. Despite poverty and the absence of formal education, Harshita’s work reflects resilience, creativity and self-reliance. Her Meji, born from a childhood dream, has drawn widespread attention and admiration across the region.
