Clash During Football Tournament in Jiribam, Four Players Seriously Injured

Jiribam | 23 December 2025

During an ongoing match of the 2nd M. Nabachandra Memorial 6-A-Side Senior Football Tournament, 2025, organised by Sunrise Club, Kadamtala under the affiliation of the All Jiribam Sports Association, an argument broke out between two teams. Subsequently, some supporters entered the playground and assaulted four players of the opposing team, leaving them seriously injured.

The injured players were initially admitted to Jiribam District Hospital and later referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.

Eyewitnesses stated that the injured players belong to the Bengali-speaking community, while the assailants are suspected to be from the Meitei community. However, the matter is subject to fair and impartial investigation by the authorities.

In view of the prevailing sensitive law-and-order situation in Jiribam and Manipur, serious questions have been raised over the lack of adequate security arrangements during the tournament. There is a strong public demand for strict legal action against the perpetrators, as well as accountability of the Organising Committee and the All Jiribam Sports Association.

The public has urged the administration to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation, take action against those responsible for negligence, and ensure comprehensive security measures at all future sporting events to prevent any escalation of communal tension.
