Mass Protest Held in Assam Against Grant of ST Status to Six Communities

Kajalgaon, Assam:
Thousands of students and tribal representatives staged a mass protest on 02 December in Kajalgaon, opposing the proposed approval of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities in Assam. The demonstration was organized by the U.N. Brahma College Unit of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU).

“Mass Protest Against the Approval of ST Status to the Six Communities of Assam,” emphasizing concerns over the possible impact on the rights, identity, and reservation benefits of existing ST communities.

Organizers stated that while they support social justice for all, the inclusion of additional communities under the ST category without proper safeguards could dilute long-standing protections meant for indigenous tribes. They urged the government to engage in wider consultation with stakeholders before taking any final decision.

The protest remained peaceful, with no reports of untoward incidents. Authorities maintained security in the area as the demonstrators dispersed after submitting their demands.
