‘Majaz’ Lucknowi remembered on his 70th death anniversary



On behalf of the #Aligarh_Muslim_University_Old_Boys_Association_Lucknow, fateha was offered at the grave of #Majaz_Lucknowi located in the Nishatganj Cemetery, and floral tributes were paid to him. On this occasion, a large number of Majaz’s admirers, including alumni of AMU Aligarh, were present.

Majaz Lucknowi, often called the Keats of Urdu, was born on 19 October 1911 in the town of Rudauli and, at the young age of 44, passed away on 5 December 1955 in Lucknow. Despite his short life, he left an indelible mark on Urdu literature. The renowned Urdu poet Josh Malihabadi had said upon Majaz’s death that had Majaz lived longer, he would have become the greatest poet of the century. Along with being a romantic poet, he was also a revolutionary voice, and he was the creator of the famous Aligarh Muslim University Tarana: “Yeh mera chaman hai mera chaman, main apne chaman ka bulbul hoon…”

Among those who paid tribute on the occasion were AMUOBA Lucknow President S. M. Shoeb, former President Prof. Shakeel Ahmad Qidwai , Prof. Riaz Mehdi, Dr. Abdul Quddoos Hashmi , Dr. Ahtesham Khan, Afzal Ahmad Siddiqui and Anwer Habeeb Alvi . Shabbir Hasan 'Ali Sagar' recited Majaz’s famous poem “Tum mere paas jo aayi ho to kya aayi ho.”

Others present included Dr. Suhail Farooqui , Tariq Siddiqui, Shahla Haque, Tahira Hasan, Muin Uddin, Architect Syed Misbahur Rahman , Zafrul Siddiqui Anchor Abdullah Siddiqui Advocate, Tauqir Ahmad, Mohd Shameem , Ashar Alig, Ahmad Siddiqui , Snehil Agrawal, Waqar Alvi, Imran Ahmad Abbasi, and Khalid Jeelani.
