Illegal Eco-Retreat Demolished at Talamali; Koraput Administration Acts on Complaints

Koraput | Dec 5, 2025 - In a major crackdown on encroachment, the Koraput administration demolished an illegal eco-retreat that had come up at Talamali, a popular tourist destination in Semiliguda block. The enforcement drive was carried out jointly by Revenue officials and police personnel.
Around 70 cottages erected over 30 acres of government land were dismantled during the operation. The structures, built under the banner ‘Go Koraput Eco Retreat,’ had been set up without any official permission. Talamali, situated just a few kilometres from Deomali, Odisha’s highest peak, draws hundreds of tourists every week.

A group of businessmen from Semiliguda had established the cottages nearly a month ago, restricting access for regular visitors and causing disturbance to the natural surroundings. The operators allegedly violated multiple norms, including unauthorised digging, dumping waste, use of heavy construction materials, and construction of improper sanitation units, all of which posed a threat to the delicate forest ecosystem.

The administration had received several complaints from locals and public representatives regarding the unauthorised activities. Acting on the inputs, the district authorities directed Koraput Sub-Collector Premlal Hial to investigate the matter and initiate necessary action.

Following the inquiry, a 24-hour notice was issued to the eco-retreat operators asking them to furnish valid permissions. After they failed to comply, joint teams from the Koraput, Narayanpatana, and Pottangi Revenue offices, along with police forces, conducted the eviction and demolition drive.

Speaking on the action taken, Sub-Collector Premlal Hial said, “The ‘Go Koraput’ eco-retreat was operating illegally on government land measuring about 30 acres. After issuing a 24-hour notice, we proceeded with eviction as per rules. The eviction process was completed on Friday.”

The administration has reiterated that no commercial activity will be allowed to encroach upon natural heritage zones or obstruct public access at tourist sites.
