Day Long Trekking Programme marking the occasion of the 14th Death Anniversary of Assam’s First Female Mountaineer and Adventurer Late Nasim Akhtar

Guwahati Nov 22: Beltola College and North East Adventure Foundation organised a day-long trekking programmed on 22 November, Saturday to commemorate the 14th death anniversary of Nasim Akhtar, the first woman mountaineer from Assam, a founder of the North East Adventure Foundation and the first member of Indian Mountaineering Federation.
During her lifetime, she was involved in various social activities, organized sports and activities in the sector of mountaineering, etc. In 1986, she led a first ladies' expedition to Mt."KANG-YASAI" in Ladakh, Himalaya. Later another three successful expeditions were led by her. Unfortunately, she had departed when she was just 55 years old. The Trekking started with a great number of students and members of the Foundation at 7:30 am from Beltola College to Basistha Temple under Asst. Professer In-charge Kamaruj Jaman. There at the temple premises, briefing and instructions for the Trekking were delivered by Jayanta Goswami, President and Karan Kumar Shandilya, General Secretary of North East Adventure Foundation. In the briefing the officials of the foundation including Manabendra Patowary, Bina Devi vetern mountaineer remembered the contribution of Nasim Akhtar and her attempt to the world of mountaineering. They pointed out that Nasim Akhtar was such a pioneering figure in mountaineering in Assam that she was known as the "Iron lady of Assam". After briefing the team moved to Garbhanga Reserve Forest, where they offered homage and prayed for the departed soul of Nasim Akhtar. A ceremonial lamp was lit there in her memory. The Trekking came to a close at 3:15 pm when the team came back to Bashistha Temple.
This trek was embarked by youth, including teaching faculty, from Beltola College, Silcher, Nalbari etc. For the successful completion of the trek we were greatly supported by The Forest Department, Garbhanga Forest Reserve, The Officer-In-Charge Basistha out Post Police Station, Beltola College, Ex-NCC Student Jagiroad College, Outdoor Consultant and All Junior- Senior member of North East Adventure Foundation.
