A Historic Step Towards Empowering One Crore Telangana Women

Category: Development / Women Empowerment

The Telangana Government has moved closer to its mission of empowering one crore women through an unprecedented public welfare initiative. Under the Indira Mahila Shakti Scheme, 600 buses are being purchased for Women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and leased to TGSRTC, ensuring stable monthly income.

In Phase-1, 151 Mandal Mahila Samakhyas across 17 districts have already received buses. Another 449 buses will be allotted in Phase-2.
Each bus costs ₹36 lakh — with ₹6 lakh contributed by the SHG and ₹30 lakh provided as Community Investment Fund.
TGSRTC pays ₹69,648 per month as rent per bus, out of which ₹50,000 goes toward loan repayment and ₹19,648 for operational expenses.
So far, five rental instalments exceeding ₹5 crore have been released.

This initiative — launched on International Women’s Day by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy — is transforming women from passengers to bus owners, boosting income and dignity. SHGs, known for discipline and credibility, are now entering the public transport sector for the first time in India.

Women leaders from multiple districts expressed pride in seeing their Samakhya’s name on RTC buses and thanked the CM and Minister Seethakka for empowering rural women with financial independence and social security.

Information verified from Telangana Government announcements, SERP & TGSRTC official updates, and public statements from Women SHGs involved in the programme.

Empowering women with assets and stable income is the strongest path to social justice. Telangana’s model ensures dignity, security, and long-term financial freedom for rural women.
