AMU Economics Department Concludes Month-Long Programme on Swadeshi Nationalism and Self-Reliance

ALIGARH, November 17: The Department of Economics, Aligarh Muslim University, successfully concluded a month-long programme on Swadeshi Nationalism and Self-Reliance, organised by the Economic Society to examine the economic implications of recent US high tariffs on India and the role of indigenous production in strengthening the nation’s economic foundations.

Prof. Shehroz Alam Rizvi, Chairman, expressed satisfaction over the outcome of the initiative, noting that the programme focused exclusively on the economic dimensions of self-reliance and guided students in analysing policy challenges and potential solutions. He said the series helped instil a deeper understanding of Swadeshi Nationalism and its relevance for building a self-reliant India aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat.

The programme comprised five major components. Students viewed selected speeches of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India highlighting the importance of adopting Swadeshi products. A mini exhibition featuring around 35 posters, showcased news clippings and information on indigenous enterprises, MSMEs, traditional crafts, handloom varieties including Khadi, and tribal art and craft.

Mini group discussions enabled students to deliberate on the economic significance of Swadeshi Nationalism, global supply chain disruptions, and the potential of native products in promoting self-reliance. Essay and slogan writing competitions were also held, with winners including Afifa Anjum and Arsalan Khan (Essay) and Gunjan Sharma, Ruma Idrees and Iqra Fatima (Slogan). Certificates were distributed by senior faculty members of the department.

An Educational Film Festival, inspired by Dadasaheb Phalke’s swadeshi vision of Indian cinema, used short films and documentaries to illustrate the contribution of indigenous products, start-ups, handloom and handicraft industries, tribal art, sustainable fashion and other sectors to India’s economic resilience.

The programme was convened by Prof. Shehroz Alam Rizvi and Prof. Mohd. Azam Khan, with Dr. Shirin Rais serving as Co-Convener and rapporteur.
