AMU Vice Chancellor Honoured by Georgia State Senate During Visit to Atlanta, USA
, November 7: The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Prof. Naima Khatoon, was honoured by the Georgia State Senate during her official visit to Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in recognition of her outstanding service, academic leadership, and contributions to higher education.
As part of her international outreach to strengthen AMU’s academic partnerships, Prof. Khatoon, accompanied by Prof. Anil Pradhan, Director, Indo-US OSU–AMU Centre for STEM Education and Research, Ohio State University, and Aligarh Alumni members Mr. Syed Hasan Kamal and Dr. Fazal Khan, visited the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). The visit was hosted by Prof. Mustaque Ahamad, Interim Chair, School of Cybersecurity and Privacy, and included discussions with Prof. Raghupathy Sivakumar, Vice President of Commercialization, Georgia Tech, on potential collaborations in innovation, technology integration, and higher education exchange.
Prof. Khatoon also toured myGenomics Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility specialising in next-generation sequencing and molecular genetic testing, managed by a distinguished AMU alumnus.
During her visit to the Indian Consulate in Atlanta, Prof. Khatoon was received by Mr. Ramesh Babu Lakshmanan, Consul General of India, who appreciated AMU’s legacy of inclusive education and discussed opportunities for institutional collaborations between Indian and American universities. He highlighted the Government of India’s initiatives aimed at fostering global academic linkages and quality enhancement in higher education.
Prof. Khatoon later visited the Georgia State Capitol, where she was hosted by Georgia State Senator Sheikh Rahman. On this occasion, Senator Rahman presented Prof. Khatoon with a Georgia State Senate Appreciation Letter, formally recognising her academic leadership and her distinction as the first woman Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University.
In honour of her visit, the Aligarh Alumni Association of Atlanta (AAAA) hosted a special alumni meet and dinner, graced by the presence of Mr. Kandhaswamy Raju, Consul (Community Affairs), IACA members, distinguished community figures, and AMU alumni. During the event, Prof. Khatoon was presented with a special plaque by Dr.Wasi Siddiqui acknowledging her significant contributions to AMU and her inspiring leadership. The evening concluded with a poetic recitation by Mr. Jaleel Nizami from Hyderabad (Telangana).
Mr. Omar Peerzada, AMU Public Relations Officer, also attended the events.
The visit underscored AMU’s sustained commitment to academic excellence, research collaboration, and global engagement, while reinforcing the deep bonds between AMU and its worldwide alumni fraternity.
