BTC launches'Dignity in Rest' Initiative for modern Crematorium and Burial Grounds Kokrajhar, October 5,2025
The newly formed Executive Body of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), led by Chief Executive Member (CEM) Hagrama Mohilary, today announced the launch of a significant community infrastructure project aimed at modernizing and developing designated spaces for final rites across the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
Named the "Dignity in Rest Infrastructure Initiative," the scheme specifically addresses the long-standing need for improved, accessible, and hygienic facilities for both burial grounds (cemeteries) and traditional crematoriums used by various religious and ethnic communities in the BTR.
CEM Mohilary stated at the announcement, "Providing dignified and appropriate facilities for our departed loved ones is a fundamental responsibility of any administration. This project ensures that all communities—whether they practice burial or cremation—have access to clean, well-maintained, and properly demarcated land for this essential purpose."
Key Components of the Initiative:
Modernization and Sanitation: The BTC will allocate funds for boundary wall construction, water supply, and approach road development for over 50 identified common burial and cremation sites in the first phase.
Multi-Faith Zones: The plan includes creating separate, clearly demarcated zones within larger development areas to respect the diverse practices of the Bodo, Adivasi, Muslim, Christian, and other communities residing in the region.
Green Infrastructure: Emphasis will be placed on planting trees and maintaining green cover around these sites to ensure an ecologically sound and peaceful environment.
Decentralized Management: Local Village Council Development Committees (VCDCs) will be empowered with maintenance grants and responsibility for the day-to-day upkeep of the facilities, ensuring community ownership and accountability.
The BTC's Department of Urban Development will oversee the execution of the project, which is scheduled to begin ground-level surveys and land demarcation across Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, and Udalguri districts by the end of this month. This initiative is being hailed as a major step towards addressing basic social infrastructure needs under the new government.
