HC issues strict guidelines on social media FIRs; quashes cases against Nalla Balu

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has framed strict guidelines for the registration of FIRs in cases related to social media posts, cautioning against indiscriminate action that could stifle free expression.

In a significant relief to BRS social media convenor Nalla Balu, the Court quashed multiple FIRs filed against him, observing that the cases lacked merit. The bench underscored that police must exercise restraint and adhere to due process while registering complaints arising out of online content.

Legal experts say the ruling will have a far-reaching impact, bringing clarity to how social media-related cases are handled in the state and offering protection to individuals against arbitrary action.
