African grey parrots noticed sharing jokes in zoo by zoo staff
A zoo in the United Kingdom had to move five African grey parrots after they began swearing at visitors. Staff noticed the birds used bad words and laughed together after saying them, as if they were sharing a joke.
The parrots were named Billy, Elsie, Eric, Jade and Tyson. They arrived at the zoo at the same time and within days began copying each other’s words. Many times they aimed their language at people walking past.
Guests thought the behavior was funny, which encouraged the birds even more. One zookeeper said it felt like watching a group of friends pushing each other to go further.
The zoo decided to separate the parrots into different areas. Staff hope the birds will start learning calmer phrases from other animals nearby.
This unusual story shows how animals can influence each other just like people do
