Dhubri (Assam):

In a sweeping eviction drive in Dhubri district, Assam, over 1,400 Bengali-origin Muslim families — many of whom were already displaced by the Brahmaputra river — have now lost their makeshift homes to government bulldozers.

The state claims the land is classified as “forest reserve.” But residents argue they had nowhere else to go after being repeatedly displaced by climate-driven river erosion over the years.

“We are not forest encroachers. We are erosion victims, poor but peaceful,” said an elderly evictee from the area. “We lived here with hope — now we sleep under the sky.”

Rights Without Rehabilitation?

Evictions, even if legally valid, must follow due process — including notice, hearings, and above all, rehabilitation. None of these were reportedly followed. No compensation or alternative shelter was provided.

Legal experts and activists say this is a violation of constitutional rights, UN human rights standards, and basic humanity.

Appeal to National Bodies

I, as a journalist and member of the All India Media Association, strongly urge:
• @India_NHRC (National Human Rights Commission)
• @NCMIndiaCouncil (National Commission for Minorities)
• Assam State Human Rights Commission
• Relevant environmental and land tribunals

to take immediate suo motu cognizance of this matter and ensure:
• Independent inquiry
• Immediate rehabilitation
• Compensation to victims
• Accountability of officials involved

Why This Matters

This is not just about land. This is about identity. Dignity. And the dangerous normalization of forced evictions against marginalized communities — especially Muslims and erosion-hit poor settlers in Assam.

When the government becomes the force that uproots instead of protects, the question arises:

Where do the poor go? If not even the state will listen — who will?

🛑 Justice delayed is justice denied.
Dhubri deserves national attention — and urgent corrective action.
