Benagaon Kanas Puri Village Suffers as Polluted Daya River Endangers Health—No Action from Authorities

Benagaon Kanas Puri, Odisha.
The residents of Benagaon Kanas Puri village, situated along the banks of the Daya River, are facing a severe health crisis due to rampant water pollution.

According to local villagers, wastewater from Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation is discharged continuously through the Gangua Nala, contaminating the river. This polluted water has become the primary source for daily needs, including bathing and, in some cases, drinking.

As a result, people are suffering from serious skin diseases, severe itching, and other waterborne health problems. Children and elderly residents are particularly affected.

Despite repeated appeals, no action has been taken by the local administration, political representatives, or government and non-government organisations. The community feels neglected and unheard.

Villagers have demanded immediate steps to:

  • Stop the discharge of untreated waste into the Daya River
  • Arrange clean drinking water supplies
  • Conduct health camps and medical check-ups for affected families

Residents have appealed through this report:

“We are not asking for luxury, only the basic right to clean water and good health. If authorities continue to ignore us, our lives and our children’s future will remain at risk.”

This issue urgently requires the attention of government agencies, health departments, and environmental NGOs, so that the people of Benagaon Kanas Puri can live a healthier, dignified life.
