Malda Railway Division Enhances Rail Infrastructure with Installation of Thick Web Switches (TWS)

Malda Railway Division has undertaken a major step towards modernization and speed enhancement of rail operations by installing Thick Web Switches (TWS) at key locations across its network. With the aim of expanding railway facilities and increasing train speeds, the Engineering Department is adopting state-of-the-art technology to boost operational efficiency and safety.

As of now, total of 216 Thick Web Switches has been successfully installed within the division's jurisdiction. By the end of the last financial year (2024–25),168 Thick Web Switch units had been installed across Malda Division. In the current financial year (2025–26), an additional 48 switches have already been installed. In the coming days, the number of TWS installations is expected to increase further to ensure smoother and more efficient rail operations.

Of these 216 installations, 46 switches have been completed at Malda Town , 24 at Barharwa , 27 at Sahibganj , 22 at Bhagalpur , 70 at Jamalpur station. These works have been carried out under the jurisdiction of Permanent Way Inspector (PWI), with seamless coordination among the Engineering, Signal & Telecommunication, Electrical, and Operating departments.

"TWS" refers to Thick Web Switches. These switches are a type of railway point (also called a turnout), used to divert trains from one track to another. They are characterized by a robust design with thick webs, making them durable and suitable for high-speed and heavy traffic routes.

Thick Web Switches are an advanced form of turnout technology that significantly improve both the speed and safety of train operations. They support speeds of up to 130 kmph, with the potential to reach 160 kmph in the future. Compared to conventional switches, TWS units are designed for longer durability, reduced vibrations, minimal maintenance, and almost zero turnout-related failures. These improvements directly contribute to better punctuality and enhanced ride comfort for passengers.

This infrastructure upgrade reflects the division’s strong commitment to adopting modern rail technology and improving overall performance across critical routes. With the continued rollout of TWS and other modernization efforts, Malda Division is playing a key role in advancing Indian Railways’ vision for a faster, safer, and more reliable transport network.
