Assam Police Launch Hunt for Wajahat Khan Over Indecent Remarks on Maa Kamakhya
Guwahati, June 4, 2025 — A specialized team from the Assam Police has departed for West Bengal in search of Wajahat Khan, who is at the center of a growing controversy after allegedly making indecent and derogatory remarks about Maa Kamakhya, one of the most revered deities in Assam and a central figure in the region’s cultural and religious identity.
The operation is being spearheaded by the 3rd Battalion of Assam Police, following clear directives from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take the “strictest possible action” against the accused.
Wajahat Khan, whose social media posts have triggered widespread outrage across Assam, is accused of making offensive and disrespectful comments that hurt religious sentiments and insulted the sanctity of the Kamakhya Temple. The remarks have sparked protests and demands for immediate legal action from various quarters, including religious organizations, political leaders, and civil society groups.
Chief Minister Sarma, responding to public sentiment, stated that such blasphemous behavior will not be tolerated under any circumstances. “Maa Kamakhya is not just a deity, she represents the spiritual soul of Assam. I have asked Assam Police to ensure that the accused faces the law with no leniency,” he said in a statement.
The Kamakhya Temple, located atop the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati, is one of the most important Shakti Peethas in India and draws millions of devotees every year, especially during the Ambubachi Mela.
As the Assam Police team intensifies its search across locations in Bengal, authorities have appealed to the public to maintain peace and trust the law enforcement process.
