Radheshyaam Bishnoi the great wildlife conservationist dies in accident
28-year-old Radheshyam Bishnoi was a remarkable wildlife conservationist from Dholiya village in Rajasthan’s Thar Desert. Renowned for his relentless dedication to protecting endangered species—especially the critically threatened Great Indian Bustard (GIB)—Radheshyam became a symbol of hope for desert wildlife preservation. Born into the Bishnoi community, which has a deep-rooted tradition of environmental stewardship, he developed a passion for rescuing injured animals from a young age.
To better serve his mission, Radheshyam trained as a veterinary assistant at Jodhpur’s Machia Biological Park, gaining vital skills for wildlife rescue and care. His work focused on safeguarding the GIB’s habitat, combating poaching, and educating local communities about conservation. In addition to these efforts, he constructed over 50 water ponds in the arid desert to provide essential drinking water for the wildlife. Thanks to his initiatives, more than 300 poachers were arrested during his lifetime.
Tragically, Radheshyam passed away on May 24, 2025, at the young age of 28 in a road accident while rushing to stop a poaching attempt. His death was deeply mourned across Rajasthan and by the global conservation community. His legacy endures through his significant contributions and his embodiment of the Bishnoi community’s values of compassion and protection for the environment.
