Professor Mohammad Sultan, a former professor and head of the Economics department at Jamia Millia Islamia, passed away in Delhi today morning at the age of 93. Professor Mohammad Sultan was the last living person who witnessed Jamia Millia Islamia University transformation from a college to a deemed university by U.G.C. in 1962 and then to a central university in 1988. He played a crucial role in accelerating the university's growth by inviting notable figures, adding new departments, and elevating the campus to a national level. Distinguished guests such as Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi, President Dr. Zakir Hussain, and several ministers and top bureaucrats visited the university during his time.

A scholar of economics, he began his education at Jamia primary school in Karol Bagh, Delhi. He was among the few who received a Fulbright scholarship to pursue higher studies at the University of Florida at Gainesville in 1960. Upon his return, he joined Jamia as a faculty member in the Economics department. He served Jamia in various capacities, including as provost, Controller of Exams, Dean, and member of the executive council.

His contributions to the growth and development of the university will be remembered for a very long time. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
