Police Inaction Sparks Outrage After Brutal Assault in Ekbalpore

Kolkata, April 1, 2025 – A shocking case of physical assault, robbery, and criminal intimidation has left a family in fear, while the Ekbalpore Police Station allegedly refuses to take action against the accused. The victim, Nafis Abedin, a resident of Ekbalpore Lane, has accused the police of ignoring his repeated pleas for justice after a violent attack on him and his family members on the night of March 31, 2025.

According to Abedin’s formal complaint, the incident occurred around 10:41 PM near the Dargah Committee in Ekbalpore when his son, nephew, and a friend were returning home. They encountered a scooty parked in the middle of the main road, blocking their way. When they requested the scooty owner to remove the vehicle, he refused and provocatively told them to find another route. A verbal altercation ensued, leading to an escalation when a group of 15-20 men, allegedly associates of the scooty owner, brutally attacked Abedin, his nephew Talha Abedin, and his friend Khurshid Alam.

The attackers not only physically assaulted them but also robbed them of cash and snatched a gold chain from Talha Abedin’s neck. Additionally, they issued death threats, warning the victims not to report the matter to the police or face dire consequences, including threats to burn their house and kill their entire family.

Despite the existence of CCTV footage from a nearby camera that captured the entire incident, the Ekbalpore Police Station has reportedly refused to register an FIR. Abedin and his injured family members sought medical attention at a trauma care center, but their ordeal did not end there. The attackers allegedly followed them to the hospital with fabricated medical reports, attempting to mislead authorities. When the victims urged the police present at the hospital to arrest the attackers, they fled, again issuing life-threatening threats.

To make matters worse, the hospital has refused to provide medical reports to the victims, citing an ongoing medical emergency and asking them to return at 4 AM on April 1, 2025. This delay has further hindered the legal process, adding to the family's distress.

Abedin has identified the alleged attackers as Naved (intoxicated at the time), Sujal (who blocked the road with his scooty), Laltu, Adnan, Sarfaraz, Rinku Ambani, and others, all residents of Ekbalpore Lane, Dargah Committee. He has called for immediate police action, including the retrieval of CCTV footage, identification and arrest of the perpetrators, and legal protection for his family. However, with the police failing to take prompt action, the victims now fear for their safety.

The apparent inaction of the police has sparked outrage among local residents and community leaders, who are demanding accountability and justice. “It is shocking that even with clear evidence, the police are reluctant to file an FIR. This sends a dangerous message that criminals can act with impunity,” said a local activist.

The family has now appealed to higher authorities, urging intervention to ensure justice is served. As the fear of retaliation looms over them, their plea remains clear: immediate police action before it’s too late.
