DANDI MOVEMENT : KNOWN AS SATYAGRAHA.
12th. March ,An inspiring Date to awaken people against injustice.
The Dandi Movement, also known as the Salt March or Salt Satyagraha, was a pivotal act of nonviolent resistance in India's struggle for independence. It began on **March 12, 1930**, when Mahatma Gandhi, accompanied by 78 followers, set out from the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad to the coastal village of Dandi in Gujarat. The march covered **387 kilometers (240 miles)** over 24 days and concluded on **April 6, 1930**.
The movement was a direct protest against the **British Salt Act of 1882**, which imposed a monopoly on salt production and sales, forcing Indians to buy heavily taxed salt from the British. Gandhi chose salt as a symbol of colonial oppression because it was a basic necessity for all, cutting across class and caste lines.
Upon reaching Dandi, Gandhi performed a symbolic act of defiance by picking up a lump of natural salt from the ground, inspiring millions across the country to break the salt laws. This act ignited a wave of civil disobedience, with people producing their own salt and boycotting British goods.
The movement drew global attention to India's independence struggle, showcasing the power of **Satyagraha (truth-force)** and nonviolent resistance. Although the British did not immediately concede to the demands, the Dandi March significantly weakened their moral authority and galvanized the Indian population.
