The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, which is investigating a gold smuggling syndicate following the arrest of Kannada actor Ranya Rao with 14.2 kg of gold at the Bengaluru International Airport on March 3, has arrested her associate in connection with the case.
DRI said it arrested Tarun Konduru Raju, who belongs to a prominent business family in Bengaluru, Sunday after investigations based on information gathered from Ranya Rao revealed her role in the gold smuggling syndicate.

Raju was produced at the home office of a special judge who remanded him in the custody of DRI for five days. DRI indicated to the court that the link between Raju and Ranya Rao and the gold smuggling racket emerged from the data extracted from a mobile phone and laptop seized from the actor after her arrest.

DRI said it arrested Tarun Konduru Raju, who belongs to a prominent business family in Bengaluru, Sunday after investigations based on information gathered from Ranya Rao revealed her role in the gold smuggling syndicate.

On Monday, DRI presented Rao in a special court after her custody ended, and the court sent her to prison for 14 days. “Considering the submissions by the Sr. Standing Counsel, learned counsel for the accused No 1 (Ranya Rao), this court is of the considered view that it is just and proper to take the accused No 1 to the judicial custody of this court,” the special court ruled Monday.

Ranya Rao was arrested at the Bengaluru airport while attempting to smuggle 14.2 kg of gold in the form of biscuits strapped to her body. DRI said the seizure of gold worth Rs 12.56 crore was one the largest at the Bengaluru airport.

Rao allegedly travelled to Dubai 27 times in the last six months.
