New Covid-Like Virus Found in Bats in China

Internet Desk: Researchers in China have identified a new virus, HKU5-CoV-2, similar to Covid-19, in bats. The virus, part of the MERS-CoV subtype, was first found in Japanese pipistrelle bats in Hong Kong. A study led by renowned virologist Shi Zhengli, involving scientists from Guangzhou Laboratory, Wuhan University, and the Wuhan Institute of Virology, warns of potential transmission to humans. While the virus shares similarities with SARS-CoV-2, it is reportedly less virulent. The research, published in Cell, highlights concerns over zoonotic spillover risks, urging further monitoring of coronaviruses in bats to prevent future outbreaks.
