Mumbai Police (Crime Branch) DCP Dikshit Gedam has stated that the criminal who attempted to rob Saifs house may be a Bangladeshi national. Initially the arrested individual claimed his name was Vijay Das but later it was revealed that his real name is Shariful Islam Shehzad. Gedam mentioned that the 30-year-old man had arrived in India around five months ago.

The police further claimed that after staying in various places for the past five months, Shariful came to Mumbai about fifteen days ago. During this time, he began introducing himself as Vijay Das. It is reported that he used different names at various times, sometimes as Vijay Das, sometimes as Vijay, and sometimes as Mohammad Ilyas.

DCP Gedam stated, "The arrested person worked with a house keeping staff. He had entered Saif's Bandra flat with the intention of robbing him. When he was confronted, he attacked the actor and then fled."
