Wait A Few Days: Mamata Banerjee Regarding Demands for Removal of Kolkata Police Chief
The BJP's demand for the removal of the city's police chief, Vineet Goyal, has intensified in light of the renewed attention being paid to the role of police in the wake of today's Supreme Court hearing in the Kolkata hospital rape-murder case. Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister, has bided her time. She stated that the impending Durga Puja necessitates a special focus on peace and order, thus the police head cannot resign right away.
"Kolkata Police Commissioner has come to me several times last week and offered to resign," Ms Banerjee said. "We have pujo coming up. Someone who is aware of law and order has to be there. If you have patience for a few days, will it be a Mahabharat (big deal)?" she added.
The demonstrators' next major demand was the resignation of the police chief, which came about after Sandip Ghose, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, was taken into custody. The parties in opposition have supported it wholeheartedly.
There are several concerns about the police's involvement in the investigation into the rape-murder of the young doctor. The woman's parents assert that they were pressured by the police to cremate their daughter's remains, and they also say that a police officer made them an offer of money to cover up the occurrence.
