Tragedy Strikes: SMCH Final-Year MBBS Student Commits Suicide, Depression Cited as Cause:

A final year student of MBBS at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) hanged himself to death at his home in Tarapur Shibbari Road. 24-year-old Biprojit Kar was found dead last night in his room, that was locked from inside. Two notes left behind by the aspiring doctor mentioned depression to be the reason behind his step. This news has shaken the area while the causes leading up to his suicide remain a mystery. According to sources, Biprojit and his mother, Santana Kar, were scheduled to take a train for Bangalore at 10 PM on Tuesday. After dinner at around 8:30 PM, Biprojit mentioned to his mother that he would take a short walk downstairs. However, he went down to the first floor of their house instead, where he was seen nervously pacing by his neighbours. Suddenly, Biprojit entered a room on the first floor and locked the door behind him. After a while, when his mother repeatedly called out and received no response, she began to panic and screamed for help. Neighbours rushed to the scene and broke down the door with a crowbar, only to find Biprojit hanging from the ceiling fan. The police and a magistrate arrived shortly after being informed by the neighbours. Biprojit’s body was recovered and sent to Silchar Medical College for post-mortem examination. During the investigation, the police discovered a suicide note in the room. The note revealed that Biprojit was struggling with severe depression, leading him to take this tragic step. The note read, “Mother, please forgive me. I am leaving you. I can no longer endure my depression, and my chest hurts too much. I am committing suicide today of my own free will. No one is responsible for my death.” A neighbour from the same building shared, “They were just two of them in the family—his mother and him. They were planning to go to Bangalore because he had a fractured arm and wanted to get treatment there. They were scheduled to board a train to Guwahati at 10 PM on Tuesday and then catch a flight to Bangalore. He was a quiet person who kept to himself and didn’t interact much with others. He was very studious, preparing for his final exams in March. We never saw him in bad company, but perhaps the academic pressure took a toll on him.” He was the only son of Santana Kar and the late Benimadhab Kar.

The neighbour added that they had seen him enter the room the previous night, but no one anticipated that he would take his own life. “The room was empty, and we have no idea where he got the rope. After he went inside, we suddenly heard his mother screaming, ‘Sonu, Sonu’—his nickname. We couldn’t figure out what was happening. She was banging on the door, calling his name, but there was no response. By that time, we were all calling out to him. Even if he had been asleep, he would have heard us. That’s when we realized something was terribly wrong. We broke open the door, and what we saw inside sent a chill down my spine”, further added the neighbour. A trusted source at SMCH said Biprojit Kar has been depressed for a very long time. He has been struggling with academics since his First Year of college and his recent eighth-semester Exam also the First Internal Exam for MBBS Final Year didn’t go well. All these had built up which is said to be the reasons behind him being depressed. This incident has left the local community in deep shock, raising numerous questions about why such an educated and promising young man would choose to end his life. The police have launched an investigation, and locals are hopeful that the true reasons behind this tragedy will soon be uncovered.
