Celebrating Rangali Bihu: Assamese Communities Rejoice in Festive Spirit

Guwahati, Assam - 13/04/2024

As the spring season blooms across Assam, communities are coming together to celebrate the vibrant festival of Rangali Bihu with enthusiasm and joy. Rangali Bihu, also known as Bohag Bihu, marks the Assamese New Year and is a time of merriment, feasting, and cultural festivities.

In villages and towns across Assam, the air is filled with the melodious tunes of traditional Bihu songs as people gather to perform Bihu dance and rituals. The festival, which spans over several days, symbolizes the spirit of renewal and prosperity.

Preparations for Rangali Bihu begin weeks in advance, with households cleaning and decorating their homes, preparing traditional delicacies, and crafting colorful rangolis (known as 'Alpana' in Assamese) to welcome the New Year.

One of the highlights of Rangali Bihu is the 'Goru Bihu,' where cows are bathed and adorned with garlands as a symbol of gratitude for their contribution to agriculture and farming. Another cherished tradition is the exchange of 'Gamosas,' traditional Assamese handwoven towels, as a sign of goodwill and respect.

In addition to cultural events and performances, Rangali Bihu also showcases traditional sports like buffalo fights (known as 'Mukoli Bihu') and egg fights, adding to the festive fervor.

Speaking about the significance of Rangali Bihu, local elder Srimanta Baruah said, "Rangali Bihu is not just a festival; it's a celebration of life, love, and togetherness. It brings our communities closer and strengthens our cultural bonds."

As Assamese families gather to celebrate Rangali Bihu, the festival serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and traditions that continue to thrive in the heart of Assam.
