Balrampur Chini Mills Makes Big Move into Eco-Friendly Plastics Production
Kolkata-based sugar producer Balrampur Chini Mills (BCML) is venturing into the production of polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastics. This ₹2,000 crore project will see a new 75,000 tonne per annum PLA manufacturing unit built beside an existing sugar plant. PLA is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastics, derived from renewable resources like corn starch or sugarcane. Biodegradable and with a wide range of applications, PLA offers a more sustainable option for packaging, cutlery, medical devices, and more. BCML's strategic placement of the unit minimizes transportation costs, and with a current price of ₹250-300 per kilogram, PLA remains a competitive option. This initiative positions BCML as a leader in India's fight against plastic pollution and paves the way for a greener future.
