Quantum Paper Mill’s Pollution: Saila Khurd Residents Submit Complaint to Khanna; Human Rights Commission, DC Asked to Act
Hoshiarpur/Daljeet Ajnoha/May 28
Residents of Saila Khurd, along with various social organizations and village panchayats, have submitted a formal complaint to Khanna, demanding a permanent solution to pollution allegedly caused by Quantum Paper Mill. The complainants claim the mill is flagrantly violating pollution control and health department regulations, and accuse the owners of risking public safety for personal gain.
The residents say noxious, gas-laden fumes are being released into the atmosphere from the mill, making it difficult to breathe in the area around the clock. They warn that exposure to these emissions could increase the risk of cancer, jaundice, respiratory illnesses and skin diseases.
The complaint further alleges that the mill discharges toxic, chemical-laden wastewater into local water sources. This contaminated water, the residents said, has been causing diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain among the local population, and could lead to other serious diseases. Locals added that repeated discussions with the mill’s management have failed to produce any solution.
Responding to the residents’ grievances, Khanna said public safety and convenience are paramount under the law. He described any business operation that disregards legal safeguards for public welfare as a violation of human rights. Khanna has written to the State Human Rights Commission and the Deputy Commissioner, urging them to take necessary action in the matter immediately.
