Guwahati University Students Protest for Fee Waiver Implementation
Guwahati: Late-night tension gripped Gauhati University as students from various organisations, including ruling party-backed, opposition-affiliated, and independent student wings, launched a major protest demanding the implementation of free admission under the fee waiver scheme and reduction of multiple university fees.
The agitation escalated Monday evening when hundreds of students blocked the national highway near the campus, causing significant traffic disruption. Protesters alleged that despite repeated appeals, many students still faced issues with fee concessions and rising admission-related charges. After a late-night discussion between student representatives and Vice-Chancellor Professor Nonigopal Mahanta, the university assured that the demands would be seriously examined. Following the assurance, students ended the blockade but warned of potential future protests if their concerns remain unaddressed.
