In the year 1760 AD, during the sacred Haridwar Kumbh Mela, the banks of the holy Ganga witnessed one of the most painful and forgotten episodes in Indian religious history.
A fierce and violent conflict erupted between the Vaishnav Bairagi saints and the Shaiva Naga Akharas over the question of precedence who would take the royal sacred bath first. Thousands of Vaishnav Bairagi saints lost their lives in this confrontation, yet this chapter has never found its place in mainstream Indian history books.
These were no ordinary saints. These were the same warriors who
Fought fierce battles against the Mughal invaders to protect Sanatan Dharma
Ran 1,70,000 Gurukuls across the length and breadth of India
Waged an unbroken 500-year battle for the liberation of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya
Organised and spearheaded the Revolution of 1857 against British colonial rule
Their contribution to India's civilisational, cultural and spiritual resistance is immeasurable yet their names remain absent from the pages of history.
The same conflict repeated itself at the 1797 Haridwar Kumbh, further deepening the wound that was first inflicted in 1760.
Colonial-era sources, including records from the East India Company and publications such as Asiatic Researches, document this conflict yet it was never taught, never honoured, and never remembered.
"History is not merely dates and events it is the untold sacrifice of those who gave everything so that Dharma could survive."
