***27,405 Cases Settled at National Lok Adalat in Hoshiarpur; Awards Worth Rs 7.83 Crore Passed
Hoshiarpur/May 9/Daljeet Ajnoha
District Legal Services Authority, acting under the directions of the Punjab State Legal Services Authority, organised the second National Lok Adalat of the year on Saturday, disposing of 27,405 cases on the spot and passing awards worth Rs 7,83,56,946. The Lok Adalat was held across 20 benches and covered a wide range of matters, including bank recovery cases, labour disputes, motor accident claims, electricity and water bill matters, matrimonial disputes, traffic challans, revenue cases, and other civil and less serious criminal cases.
***Proceedings Across Benches***
The Lok Adalat functioned under the leadership of District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, Rajinder Aggarwal. In Hoshiarpur, 20 benches were constituted, including nine benches in the judicial courts of Hoshiarpur, two each in Dasuya, Mukerian and Garhshankar, and five revenue benches. In all, 30,912 cases were taken up, of which 27,405 were resolved on the spot.
***Special Help Desks***
To facilitate payment of traffic challans, special help desks were set up by the staff of the District Legal Services Authority and para-legal volunteers. These desks were meant to help people clear pending challans with ease and avoid unnecessary inconvenience. Bar Association Hoshiarpur also extended full cooperation in ensuring the smooth conduct of the Lok Adalat.
***Old Disputes Resolved***
Two long-pending disputes were also settled through mutual agreement. In the civil appeal Parveen Kumar vs. Maninder Singh, a case that began in 2016, the parties reached a settlement during the pre-Lok Adalat proceedings on April 4, 2026. Under the agreement, Parveen Kumar was declared the owner of the disputed property in village Bankarnpur, tehsil Mukerian, while Maninder Singh and his mother were held to have no rights over it.
Another rent appeal, Ashok Kumar vs. Manmohan Singh, was also resolved. The case, filed in 2018 over eviction on the grounds of personal requirement and non-payment of rent, was finally settled after the parties arrived at a compromise during the pre-Lok Adalat stage.
***Public Appeal***
Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Neeraj Goyal, appealed to the public to make greater use of Lok Adalats, noting that they save both time and money. He said that awards passed in Lok Adalats are final and not appealable, while also promoting goodwill and mutual understanding between the parties.
