Vijay stakes claim to form govt in Tamil Nadu with support of Congress, VCK, IUML, Left parties

Chennai:TVK Chief C Joseph Vijay met Governor Rajendra Arlekar at Lok Bhawan in Chennai on Saturday and staked claim to form government in In Tamil Nadu with the support of 120 MLAs. Mr Vijay is set to take oath as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) which emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the recent assembly polls achieved the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member House, required to form a new government in the state by securing backing from Congress, Left parties, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

Talking to reporters in Chennai, TVK leader Adhav Arjuna said, both VCK and IUML have extended unconditional support to it for government formation.

Vijay, who won from two Assembly constituencies, will have to vacate one seat, reducing TVKs strength to 107. The combined strength of the supporting parties, including Congress with five MLAs and CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML with two MLAs each, stands at 13.

In Tamil Nadu, road for Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form government in the state seems clear after VCK and IUML extended unconditional support to the party. With this, TVK which had emerged as the single largest party after winning 108 seats in the recent assembly polls has secured the majority mark of 118.

Chief of Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam, T. T. V. Dhinakaran, has demanded that the Governor take action over the alleged forged letter of support from his party MLA to TVK.

The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) is expected to announce its decision by this evening following a formal meeting with TVK. Meanwhile, the MLAs of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) have arrived in Chennai from a resort in Puducherry to meet the partys General Secretary, Edappadi K. Palaniswami. National General Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), M. A. Baby, said it was the Governors duty to invite the single largest party to form the government. Speaking to the media in Chennai, he accused the Governor of deliberately delaying the process based on directions from Delhi. He further alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was attempting to help the AIADMK form the government by stalling the democratic process.

In the 234-member Assembly, the ruling DMK secured 59 seats, while its main rival, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, won 47 seats. TVK Chief C Joseph Vijay won both Perambur and Tiruchy East seats.
