Mohammed Usman Arif: Aligarh’s Voice of Integrity in Indian Politics

Bikaner: Mohammed Usman Arif, born on 5 April 1923 in Bikaner, Rajasthan, was a distinguished political leader known for his integrity and public service. His education at Aligarh Muslim University, where he earned a Master’s degree and LLB, laid the foundation for his career rooted in legal and ethical principles. After graduation from Dungar College, Arif pursued a life dedicated to diplomacy, community engagement, and governance.

Arif held significant positions within the Indian National Congress, including President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee in 1980 and multiple terms as a Rajya Sabha member in 1970, 1976, and 1982. Between 1980 and 1984, he served as Union Minister overseeing Construction, Housing, Agriculture, and Supplies. His governorship of Uttar Pradesh from 1985 to 1990 reflected his commitment to administrative clarity and secularism. Additionally, he contributed to cultural and religious institutions such as the Rajasthan Haj Committee, Sahitya Academy, and Muslim Waqf Boards. Arif passed away on 22 August 1995, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to inclusive governance.
