President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were rushed out of the White House Correspondents' Association dinner by Secret Service agents on Saturday night (Apr 25) after loud bangs were heard.

About an hour after Trump was rushed from the event, he posted on Truth Social that a "shooter had been apprehended".

Third attempt on Trump's life

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner takes place every year, but this was the first time Donald Trump attended the event as US president.

The shooting was the third apparent assassination attempt on Trump, as Nick Harper reports from Washington.

Officer who was shot wore bullet-proof vest

The officer who was shot by the suspect was wearing a bullet-resistant vest and is expected to be okay, according to a law enforcement official cited by the Associated Press.

What is the White House Correspondents’ Dinner?

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is an annual event in Washington, DC that brings together journalists, politicians and celebrities for a night that mixes politics, media and entertainment.

Organised by the White House Correspondents’ Association, the dinner dates back to the early 1920s and was originally a modest gathering of reporters covering the US presidency.

Over time, it has evolved into one of the most high-profile events on the US political calendar.

The White House Correspondents' Association invited Trump this year despite his repeated attacks on the media.

Unlike all other presidents from the past 100 years, Trump had never attended while in office.

The dinner has taken place at the Hilton hotel for years.

During the event, the hotel remains open to regular guests, with little screening for people not entering the dinner itself.

In past years, that has created openings for disruptions in the lobby and other public spaces, including protests in which security moved to remove guests who unfurled banners or staged demonstrations.

Gunman inside secured part of venue: CNN

Veteran CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who was attending the event, says he was just a few feet away from the suspect when the shooting started.

“The shooter was clearly on the ground shooting when I saw him, I was only a few feet away,” Blitzer said.

The suspect was in the secured part of the venue, he said.

Suspect armed with shotgun

According to an FBI official, the suspect was armed with a shotgun and had attempted to breach security at the White House press dinner.

The suspect opened fire at a Secret Service agent, who is reported to be "fine".

Trump to hold press conference

In another post on Truth Social, President Trump says that Melania Trump, JD Vance and all members of the cabinet are in “perfect condition”.

He says that law enforcement requested that they leave the premises, consistent with protocol, and that the event will be rescheduled within 30 days.

The president also says that he will hold a press conference shortly.

The event to continue?

“Quite an evening”, says President Trump on Truthsocial, as he confirms that the shooter has been apprehended.

He says he has recommended to “LET THE SHOW GO ON” but will be guided by law enforcement. Regardless of the decision, the evening will much different than planned, he says.

Five to eight shots reportedly fired

The Secret Service and other authorities swarmed the banquet hall at the Washington Hilton as guests dining on burrata salad ducked under tables by the hundreds.

“Out of the way, sir!” someone yelled. Others yelled to duck.

From one corner, a “God Bless America” chant began as Trump was escorted off stage. He fell briefly - he apparently tripped - and was helped up by Secret Service agents.

A law enforcement official confirmed there was a shooter but no further details were immediately available. All officials protected by the Secret Service were evacuated.

Some in the crowd reported hearing what they believed to be five to eight shots fired.
