Women Candidates in West Bengal Election 2026

TMC Leads, Overall Representation Still Low
In the run-up to the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal, political parties have fielded a notable number of women candidates, with the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) taking a clear lead. According to the latest data, TMC has nominated 52 women candidates, the highest among all parties, reinforcing its focus on women’s representation.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) follows 31 women candidates, placing it in second position. Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress has fielded approximately 15 women, and the Left Front has nominated around 18 women candidates. Other smaller parties and independent groups together account for roughly 5 women candidates.
Despite these numbers, overall female participation remains below the 33% benchmark often advocated for gender parity in politics. Analysts suggest that while progress is visible, there is still a significant gap in achieving balanced representation.
Key observations from the candidate list indicate that TMC continues to prioritize women’s inclusion, while BJP maintains a competitive but lower count. Congress and Left Front, on the other hand, appear to be lagging behind in promoting women candidates.
As campaigning intensifies, the role of women candidates is expected to be a crucial factor in shaping voter sentiment across the state. The election is likely to not only determine political leadership but also reflect the evolving dynamics of gender representation in Indian politics.
