Report on Mulberry Silkworm Rearing Initiative by the Department of Zoology
Mendhar,18
The Department of Zoology successfully initiated a mulberry silkworm rearing program as part of its commitment to experiential learning and skill development among students. This initiative was inspired by a two-day orientation program on Seri Business held on 24th and 25th March 2026, organized in collaboration with the Central Silk Board (CSB). The program provided valuable insights into the economic and practical aspects of sericulture, motivating the department to implement hands-on training activities.
Under the able leadership of Dr. Sarshad Hussain, Head of the Department, and with the active involvement of faculty member Prof. Inam-ul-Haq, the department formally commenced the mulberry silkworm rearing process on 30th March 2026. The initiative marked a significant step toward integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application in the field of sericulture.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Mohammad Azam, whose guidance and encouragement served as a driving force behind this endeavor. The primary objective of the program was to equip students with practical skills and firsthand experience in silkworm rearing, thereby enhancing their understanding of sericulture as a viable agro-based industry.
Essential materials required for the rearing process, including silkworm seed (eggs), disinfectants, and rearing trays, were generously provided by the Sericulture Development Officer, Dr. Harjeet Singh. His support ensured that the program was conducted in a systematic and scientifically appropriate manner.
Through this initiative, students gained valuable exposure to the lifecycle management of silkworms, maintenance of hygienic rearing conditions, and the overall process involved in silk production. The program not only enriched their academic learning but also opened avenues for entrepreneurship and self-employment in the field of sericulture.
The Department of Zoology aims to continue such practical training programs in the future to further strengthen student competencies and promote skill-based education.
