Zafar Iqbal, was honoured with the ‘Hockey India Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award 2025’, AMU Alumnus

AMU ALIGARH, March 30: 1980 Moscow Olympics gold medallist and former Indian hockey captain, Janab Zafar Iqbal, was honoured with the ‘Hockey India Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award 2025’, recognising his outstanding contribution to Indian hockey.

An illustrious alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Zafar Iqbal was a key member of India’s gold medal-winning team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and later captained the national side, including at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Over the years, he has also served Indian hockey in various capacities as coach, selector and mentor.

Congratulating him on the prestigious honour, AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon said that the recognition is a matter of immense pride for the entire AMU fraternity. She noted that Zafar Iqbal’s exemplary career, marked by leadership, dedication and sporting excellence, continues to inspire generations of young players.

On behalf of the university and the Alig community, Prof. Sartaj Tabassum, Chairman, Alumni Affairs Committee, also extended his heartfelt congratulations, describing the award as a fitting tribute to Zafar Iqbal’s lifelong commitment to the sport.

Zafar Iqbal, who completed his B۔Sc. in۔ Civil Engineering from ZHCET AMU, has been the recipient of several prestigious honours, including the Arjuna Award (1983), Yash Bharti Award (1994) and Padma Shri (2012).

The AMU community has expressed pride in his achievement and wished him continued good health and success.
