Mamata vs EC: Bengal Govt Moves Calcutta High Court Over IAS, IPS Transfers

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal has approached the Calcutta High Court challenging the transfer of several IAS and IPS officers by the Election Commission of India following the announcement of assembly elections.

The petition, filed by TMC leader and lawyer Kalyan Banerjee, names Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar as a respondent.

It questions the EC’s decision to transfer senior officials without consulting the state government.

The transfers included key positions such as the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, and Director General of Police, carried out shortly after the poll announcement on March 15.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly criticised the move, calling it an “undeclared emergency” and alleging an attempt to control the state through institutional pressure.

The matter is expected to be heard early next week.
