India achieved significant milestone in field of organ donation, transplantation: Health Ministry

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has stated that India has achieved a significant milestone in the field of organ donation and transplantation. The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) has recorded unprecedented progress in organ donation, allocation, and transplantation across the country. The number of transplants in the country has increased from fewer than 5,000 in 2013 to nearly 20,000 in 2025, marking a remarkable fourfold rise.

The Ministry added that around 18 percent of transplants are currently being performed using organs donated by deceased donors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also highlighted the importance of organ donation in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme yesterday and gave further impetus to the organ donation movement in the country. The Ministry further stated that more than 1,200 families came forward to donate the organs of their loved ones after death in 2025, and each donor is now a multi-organ donor, transforming many lives.

More than 4.8 lakh citizens have registered to donate organs and tissues after death through an Aadhaar-based verification system since 17 September 2023. India has achieved competence in performing complex organ transplants such as heart, lung, and pancreas transplants. India also leads the world in hand transplants and performs more hand transplants than any other country. These remarkable achievements reflect the strong and sustained impetus provided by the Government of India, translating policy vision into measurable, life-saving outcomes.
