Series of Collisions Near HDFC Bank Leaves 7 Bikes Wrecked in Koraput

Koraput | Dec 19, 2025 - A major road mishap created panic and traffic chaos on National Highway No. 26 in Koraput town on Friday after a speeding truck lost control and rammed into several vehicles near the HDFC Bank area. The incident occurred during busy hours, resulting in a chain collision involving more than seven motorcycles, a mobile case van, and a pickup van.

According to eyewitnesses, Dalu khillo said that, “the truck first hit a line of parked motorcycles near the roadside before crashing into a mobile case van and a pickup van. The force of the impact caused both the mobile case van and the pickup van to overturn on the road. The out-of-control truck then smashed into an electric pole and finally came to a halt. The electric pole was completely broken, leading to concerns over power disruption in the locality.

As a result of the accident, seven motorcycles were completely damaged, while the mobile case van and the pickup van suffered heavy damage. The truck driver sustained serious injuries and was trapped inside the vehicle for some time due to the impact. Local people and police personnel rushed to the spot and managed to rescue the injured driver, who was later shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition was stated to be serious.

The accident caused massive traffic congestion on the busy NH-26 stretch for over an hour, affecting vehicular movement towards Jeypore and Sunabeda. Police later diverted traffic and deployed additional personnel to regulate the situation until the damaged vehicles were removed with the help of cranes.

Confirming the incident, Sanjay Kumar Mandal, SDPO, Koraput, said that preliminary investigation indicates rash and negligent driving by the truck driver as the possible cause of the mishap. “On receiving information, police immediately reached the spot and carried out rescue operations. Traffic was temporarily disrupted but was restored after clearing the road. A detailed investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the accident, and legal action will be taken as per law,” he said.

Meanwhile, locals have raised concerns over frequent accidents along the NH-26 stretch near the HDFC Bank, citing heavy traffic flow, roadside parking, and lack of proper traffic management. They have urged the district administration to take immediate steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
