Parliamentary Chaos: A Reflection of Political Immaturity and the Role of Indian Judiciary

The recent scuffle in Parliament, involving Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and BJP MPs, including Pratap Sarangi, has not only brought disgrace to the sanctity of the nation’s legislature but also exposed the widening fault lines in Indian politics. What should have been a space for meaningful debate and legislative discussions has turned into an arena of physical confrontations and verbal mudslinging. The incident has reignited questions about the behavior of lawmakers and the efficacy of democratic institutions in ensuring accountability.

The controversy erupted when MPs from the INDIA Bloc staged a protest near the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over alleged remarks on Ambedkar. In the ensuing chaos, BJP MP Pratap Sarangi was injured, with allegations that Rahul Gandhi pushed another BJP MP, leading to Sarangi’s injury. Congress, however, countered these claims, accusing BJP MPs of physically blocking Gandhi’s entrance and even pushing senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who is over 80 years old.

The incident has escalated into a political blame game, with FIRs filed on both sides. Rahul Gandhi has been charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including sections for causing hurt, endangering safety, and criminal intimidation. While these charges carry prison terms of up to seven years, they are bailable offenses. Gandhi has also claimed that BJP MPs attempted to intimidate him and obstruct his entry into Parliament, describing the incident as a blatant attack on democratic principles.

This episode reflects a worrying trend in Indian politics, where parliamentary decorum is repeatedly compromised for partisan gain. Parliament, often referred to as the "temple of democracy," has increasingly become a stage for theatrics rather than constructive discourse. The question arises: If lawmakers themselves resort to such behavior, what message does it send to the citizens they represent?

Amid this political drama, the judiciary has emerged as a critical institution for upholding democratic values and ensuring accountability. The Indian judiciary, often seen as the last bastion of justice, must navigate the fine line between maintaining impartiality and ensuring timely action. While the law allows for the prosecution of parliamentarians, the judiciary must ensure that the process is not influenced by political bias.

Justice delayed is justice denied. The judiciary must act swiftly in such cases to reinforce public trust in democratic institutions. This includes holding those responsible accountable, irrespective of their political affiliation, while protecting the rights of elected representatives to perform their duties without fear or intimidation. The electorate places its faith in lawmakers to prioritize the nation’s interests, but such displays of immaturity erode public confidence in governance. The lack of decorum among representatives reflects a deeper crisis in India’s democratic ethos, where political rivalries overshadow the responsibility to serve the people.

The judiciary, therefore, has a dual role to play: to ensure accountability through impartial legal proceedings and to act as a guardian of democratic principles. However, it is also essential for political leaders to set an example of integrity and respect for institutional values. Only then can the democratic framework function as intended, offering justice, equality, and transparency to every citizen.

This incident should serve as a wake-up call for both the political class and civil society to uphold the ideals enshrined in the Constitution. Democracy thrives on debate and dissent, but not at the cost of institutional sanctity and public trust.
