*EASTERN RAILWAY EMBARKS ON MASSIVE TREE PLANTATION DRIVE FOR A CLEANER AND GREENER ENVIRONMENT*

Kolkata, September 27, 2024:

As part of the ongoing Swachhta Hi Seva campaign, Eastern Railway has undertaken a comprehensive initiative to promote environmental sustainability through a large-scale tree plantation programme. Under the leadership of Sri Milind Deouskar, General Manager of Eastern Railway, over 30,000 (thirty thousand) saplings have been planted across various locations within the Eastern Railway jurisdiction in last 10 days.

This massive plantation drive covered areas such as Railway Colonies, Yards, Playgrounds, station circulating areas, and school complexes. The programme received enthusiastic participation from diverse sections of the community, including local citizens, railway staff, and passengers, all of whom contributed to the success of this initiative.

A variety of tree species with known environmental benefits were planted during the drive. These included Debdaru (Monsoon Longifolium), Segun (Teak), Shisham, Mahogany, and Neem (Azadirachta Indica), all of which play a significant role in improving air quality and contributing to the green cover.

The distribution of plantation efforts across divisions is as follows:

Howrah Division: 1520 saplings
Sealdah Division: 1624 saplings
Asansol Division: 6450 saplings
Malda Division: 15,000 saplings
Kanchrapara Workshop: 135 saplings
Liluah Workshop: 4520 saplings
Jamalpur Workshop: 800 saplings

The preparatory work for the plantation involved extensive ground surface preparation, jungle clearing, and dressing to ensure that the saplings have the best conditions for growth.

This initiative reflects Eastern Railway’s commitment to environmental conservation and its proactive role in fostering a greener future. By involving local communities, students, and railway personnel, this tree plantation drive serves as a significant contribution toward building a cleaner, greener environment for future generations.
