India and Italy Elevate Ties to "Special Strategic Partnership"
ROME — Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a successful two-day official visit to Italy on May 20, 2026, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations. During the visit, hosted by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the two leaders officially elevated the India-Italy relationship to a Special Strategic Partnership.
The visit, which builds upon the momentum generated by high-level exchanges in 2024 and 2025, has set an ambitious roadmap for cooperation across economic, technological, and security domains.

Economic Growth and Trade
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral trade, setting an ambitious target of €20 billion by 2029. The partnership will focus on:
Industrial Collaboration: Fostering partnerships in sectors such as semiconductors, clean energy, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and critical raw materials.
Supply Chain Resilience: Leveraging the EU–India Free Trade Agreement to integrate SMEs and build more robust industrial supply chains.
Critical Minerals: Signing a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to secure sustainable and resilient supply chains for critical minerals.
Science, Technology, and AI
Innovation was a centerpiece of the discussions, with the announcement of INNOVIT India, an innovation hub designed to bridge the startup ecosystems of both nations.
Artificial Intelligence: The leaders committed to a human-centric and trustworthy AI framework, following Italy's contribution to the 2026 AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.
Space Cooperation: Strengthening collaboration between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Italian Space Agency on Earth observation, heliophysics, and space exploration.
Defence and Security
The two nations adopted a Defence Industrial Roadmap, paving the way for co-production and co-development of military hardware, including naval platforms and electronic warfare systems.
Counter-Terrorism: Both Prime Ministers strongly condemned all forms of terrorism, including the April 2025 Pahalgam attack. They committed to deepening cooperation in counter-terrorism and financing prevention.
